TCM Moxibustion (艾灸) is a Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment that involves burning herbs, usually mugwort herbs, and applying the heat to various acupressure points on the body to trigger a healing response. Moxibustion is commonly used to treat patients with cold or stagnant qi. The heat helps to promote better blood circulation, expel cold and dampness, relieve pain and strengthen the body’s qi energy.

How TCM Moxibustion Works
Moxibustion works similarly to acupuncture, except that instead of needles, moxibustion uses heat from burning herbs to specific acupressure points on the body. Heat from moxibustion helps to move qi energy along the meridian channels and clear energy blockages. In TCM, qi blockages are the reason behind physical and mental health issues. There two methods of carrying out moxibustion treatment – direct and indirect. Direct moxibustion uses mugwort cones that are lighted and placed on the body. These cones are removed before they burn down completely. For indirect moxibustion, the moxa stick is burned and hovered 3cm to 4cm away from the treatment area. The therapist will monitor the heating of the moxa stick and decide the treatment duration. In most cases, moxibustion should not hurt, and most patients report feeling a warm sensation all over their bodies after the treatment.
Treatment Process
Our licensed TCM physicians will do a health assessment by examining your tongue, pulse, temperature, skin tone and muscle tone. You are encouraged to share your pain area, medical history and background for our TCM physician to form an accurate diagnosis. Once the assessment is completed, you will be prescribed a tailored treatment plan. Depending on your condition, our TCM physician may recommend a combination of moxibustion and other treatments. The frequency of treatments differs from one patient to another depending on their body condition. Generally, more serious disorders require treatment two to three times a week, which can be gradually reduced to weekly sessions once the condition has improved.
